Secure Socket Layer (SSL) has become the new standard for modern websites to gain high credibility in search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) and website visitors.

Why should you install SSL? Yes absolutely, because SSL or Secure Sockets Layer is a technology for securing website domains to be encrypted.

SSL also functions so that the personal data of your website visitors does not leak to irresponsible people.

Personal data such as email, telephone, credit card information, and others are very important and need to be kept confidential.

That way, you must install SSL on your website. Hmm… will it cost you more?

Not really, some hosting service providers offer free SSL.

For example, a free Namecheap SSL certificate is one of the features offered in the Namecheap hosting plan.

Requirements to get a Namecheap SSL Certificate:

  • Have a hosting package (at least Shared Hosting).

  • Have a website to host on Namecheap.

You can still get an SSL certificate even if the website domain name is with another hosting provider.

Most importantly, your website is hosted on Namecheap.

Here’s a complete tutorial on activating and installing a free SSL certificate from Namecheap.

Note: It is recommended to enable “development mode” so that visitors are not disturbed during the domain propagation process.

Namecheap SSL Certificate Activation Guide (Free)

  • Go to your cPanel account then login. If you don’t know, please ask your cPanel URL to Namecheap Customer Service.

  • Look for the Namecheap SSL menu.

  • On the website domain that you want to install SSL on, click the “Install” button.
  • In this section you must enter the CSR code, in the first column and fill in the second column with the address of the domain you want to install the SSL for.
  • If you don’t get the CSR code, go to the control panel and click the SSL/TLS
  • Click on the “Certificate Signing Requests (CSR)” section.

  • If so, slide down and fill in according to your data.
  • Next, fill in the data according to your data then on this page click “Generate“.
  • Copy the CSR code and enter the code, then click “Next“.
  • Next, fill in the data, for the email method it is recommended to use a Root email that was created on your own hosting.

  • Confirm admin email and then click “Install Certificate”.
  • Log in to your email dashboard and look for an email notification that says “Order” for an SSL.
  • Click on the “Here” section and enter the code.
  • Continue to click “Next” and you will get another email containing the code.

  • Copy the code and go to the SSL/TLS menu.
  • Click the “Certificates (CRT)” menu.
  • Upload/paste on the next page the code you got in your email.
  • Save on the “Save Certificate” menu.
  • Go to the next menu which is “Install and Manage SSL for Your site (HTTPS)“.
  • Select the domain that you installed SSL on.
  • Click “Autofill by Domain“.
  • Click “Install Certificate“.
  • Click “Ok” on the notification.
  • Once done, wait about 15 minutes then click the “Sync with Namecheap” button. If the status changes to active, turn on SSL by going through the lever button on the right side.

Now SSL for your domain is active. But, don’t visit your website just yet.

Wait up to 30 minutes for the browser to recognize the new link (HTTPS) of your website.

If you have already accessed it, usually you will receive a message “Your connection is not private“. This is natural because the SSL certificate has just been installed.

This problem can be solved by clearing the browser cache or using another browser.

How to make sure SSL is fully active?

You can check it with an online tool called KProxy or Link Decoder.

Link Decoder is the most recommended tool considering it was created by Namecheap.

If you are using WordPress, are there any other settings?

There is not any. Your domain automatically gets an HTTPS title in front of it without needing to change its permalink or address.

However, you can still install the WordPress Really Simple SSL plugin.

The plugin will “force” secure access to all pages of the site automatically.

It’s been more than 15 minutes, why is the Namecheap SSL certificate status not active?

There are many reasons why SSL is not active, for example an error in the certificate, the website’s domain is with another provider, and so on.

Immediately contact Customer Service and explain what problems are encountered. They can usually handle this quickly.

Is Namecheap SSL certificate really free?

Yes, but only for the first year and for as long as the hosting plan is active.

Namecheap SSL is basically a product of Comodo PositiveSSL which “joins the sale” on Namecheap.

However, the format offered is more economical than buying it directly from Comodo. Renewal fee is only $8.88 per year.

After a year has passed you can decide to continue using PositiveSSL (and pay) or switch to another service such as the free SSL Cloudflare.
